The village of Kővágóörs, which currently has about 700 inhabitants, is located in the county of Veszprém, a few kilometers north of Lake Balaton. The first Jewish religious community in Kővágóörs was founded in 1778, the first rabbi was Pfeifer Zélig Lébi. The Jews of the area went to pray in the Kővágóörs synagogue, built in the 1820s. The religious community included 9 nearby settlements. A mikveh (ritual bath) was here, and a shakter (butcher) also worked here, who slaughtered and cut up the animals intended according to strict religious regulations.
