We know of many medieval European synagogues, but many of them have been destroyed or remodelled. So the medieval Old Synagogue of Sopron, with its intricate internal spatial organisation, and with the separate prayer room for women, is of exceptional value. For centuries it was waiting immured, to be discovered only in the 1960s. Walk around the building, and learn about a portion of the history of the Sopron medieval Jewish community and the recent history of its synagogue.
